How Can Students Improve Their Mental Health
According
to NUS (National Union of Students) majority of students face mental health
issue at some point, this is not solely based upon depression, but several
other stuffs include like stress, anxiety, loneliness, sleeping issue, eating
issue, low self-esteem and substance abuse. Mental health awareness is equally
important for everyone, but for student it directly effects on their academic
performances. Their academic performances reduce in term of declining their
abilities in concentration, energy level, dependability, mental ability and
optimism.
Mental Health: -
Mental
health includes number of things like our emotional, psychological and social well-being.
It influences on our thinking, feeling and acting abilities. It also helps us
to handle situation related to stress and make choices. A mental health illness
is an illness of brain that cause disruption in thinking, behavior and emotions
that make us difficult to cope with ordinary situation of life. The two most
common mental health problems are:
Anxiety Disorder: - In this brain alert us about future danger. Occasional
anxiety is OK, like before taking test and making big decisions. But in
disorder, anxiety become constant and overwhelming with fear. The excessive
anxiety causes us to avoid class, family get-togethers and other social
situation.
Mood Disorder: - Health professional use mood disorder widely that include
all type of depression and bipolar disorder. It primary effects person emotions
and person feel extreme level of happiness, sadness or both for long period of
time.
Keeping Healthy Body and Healthy Mind: -
During
study we care much about money and other materialistic things and sadly focus
less on personal matters that lie deeper below the surface. As discussed above,
according to NUS, majority of students face mental health issue and this
becoming increasingly prominent issue.

keep a healthy body and minds throughout your studies, here is five tips for
you;
Recognize strong relationship between healthy body and minds
Keeping
a physical fitness and balance diet during study in university will impact
hugely on both physical and mental health. The impact of mental fitness is huge
and sometimes by just adopting a small thing we can make a big positive
difference.
Take time for you
A
study conducted by professor Matthew Zawadzki, says that leisure activities provide
intimidate stress relief and others many health benefits. In order to get full
results, the activity must be based upon mentally engaging, otherwise it will
negate the impact.
When students go for a leisure activity, they
have less stress level that cause less boredom and sometimes absolutely zero
boredom which can help students to avoid unhealthy behavior.
Get enough sleep
With
every additional insufficient sleep, the risk of mental health problem will
also increase. Students should get proper sleep to stay focused and improve
concentration in their academic performance. Beside attention and behavior
problem, students can get obesity, type 2 diabetes, poor mental health and
injuries. At the end these all effects on poor grades in result.
This
insufficient sleep can impact on overall personality of a students in a long
run. Hence all institution, which includes, schools, parents and health care
professionals should play their role for the betterment of students in society.
Schools
can add sleep related courses in curriculum to help students understand about
importance of sleep. Parents can encourage those habits through which children’s
get proper sleep. Parents can set regular bedtime and rise time including
weekends. Health care professionals can also educate students and their parents
about the factors that contribute to insufficient sleep.
Do regular exercise
We
do physical exercise to off-load stress, but exercise in not only for physical
but can calm our mind too. We can burn off unwanted feeling by doing many
exercises like running, power walking, swimming, cycling. Moreover, every
student has their own strengths and weaknesses. Those students who work hard
and still get depressed for not achieving good grade, sports is a field where
they shine themselves. This sense of achievement is a building block of their
self-esteem. Physical exercise also releases endorphins in the brain, this will
help children to feel more happier.
Eat healthy organic food
Beside
nutrients, organic food helps us in combating with cognitive decline and with
symptoms of dementia. The less of both have very harmful effect on academic
performance. Organic food can boost up immune system and help us to fight with
infections diseases, through this student can avoid skipping classes directly
to save their that they have to allocate for doctor.
Achieve some small goals.
Creating
goals involves our intention, planning and realistic actions. Goals ensure us,
we can making positive change for ourself. Those students who set some small
goals and achieve them, have higher self-motivation, self-esteem, confidence
and independence. These small goals are important, because they give us sense
of purpose and something to struggle.
